Portfolio Tips

  • Be conscious about the order of your work

    • Make sure everything has a nice flow

    • Start and end with your strongest pieces

    • Group works that go together, ex. colorful paintings, B&W works, experimental pieces

  • Make sure to utilize descriptions to fully explain your thought process, inspirations and technique

    • For live studies, or other work that might not be as “emotionally driven,” focus more on explaining what you learned from creating the piece, or even leave that description to a brief statement.

  • Research the school’s expectations

    • Some school’s will put on their website what kind of works they want to see. If your school does not have any, look up accepted portfolios for that school on youtube or google.

    • Some schools want to see foundational skills, others only want to see your creative work.

  • Don’t be afraid if your work is “good” or not, school’s want to see students who can be shaped into artists through their classes

  • Include unique and original pieces

    • These can include pieces exploring non-traditional mediums
